Green 'lemonade' Recipe
Comments Off on Green 'lemonade' Recipe

A lot of people who want to start juicing find it very hard  to know what exactly to use for their juices. There is so much variety out there, spinach, kale, Swiss chard, pineapples, beetroot, carrot and so much more.  The first time I juiced, I was so scared to try anything I ended up only using apples, well that was before I learnt that fruit juices on their own have too much sugar and too little fiber, so they are not the best option for you. The best would be a fruit and vegetable cocktail, made up of more vegetables than fruit.  I know you are probably thinking, no thanks!  But I want you to try this simple nutritious  ‘lemonade’ recipe before making up your mind about green juices, besides the health benefits of juicing speak for themselves. This simple healthy recipe shows you how to make fresh, 100 % nutritional ‘lemonade’ that is tasty and beneficial to the body.  It has no added additives or preservatives, no colouring and no artificial sweeteners. Kids will love it!

Green lemonade

What you will need

Ingredients

  •  2 cups baby spinach
  • 1 whole lemon
  • 1/2 celery stalk
  • ½ large cucumber
  • 3 apples
  • 1 glass water (optional)

Why these ingredients?

All these ingredients are rich in vitamin C, which is an antioxidant that strengthens the immune system, helping fight diseases in the body.

Spinach – Spinach is rich in iron and magnesium, which is good for blood circulation and it is also rich in calcium which strengthens the bones

Lemon – lemon is alkalizing in the body, reducing the acid levels in the body this strengthens the immune system and help combat heartburn and acid reflux.

Cucumber – Cucumbers have a high water content, which helps remove toxins and unwanted waste in the body. For other health benefits of cucumbers click here.

Apples – Apples add natural sweetness to this lemonade recipe. The fructose in apples provides energy in the body. Apples also provide soluble fibre, which is excellent for digestion and expelling excess waste.

How to

  • Wash all the produce thoroughly even if it is organic.
  • Cut the lemon in 4 pieces, remove the seeds and chuck it into the juicer (don’t peel the lemon for one a piece of the lemon, as lemon rind adds flavour and is rich in antioxidants).
  • Depending on how large your cucumber is, cut it in pieces small enough to fit your feeding tube.
  • Run all the ingredients through a juicer.
  • You can add water to dilute the juice (this is optional).
  • Enjoy.

What about the pulp?

A good thing to do with your pulp is to put in the garden, as compost for planted vegetables and fruits or you could give it to chickens and any other farm animals you might have. If you prepared a mostly fruit juice (made up with carrots apples and oranges) throw the pulp into some baking, it increases the fibre content in your baking and also adds a nice flavour.  For most vegetables juices you can add the pulp into soups, it thickens the soup naturally.
